The Church [Canon Law] requires that preparation for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist be “distinct” and “separate”. For this reason, we do all in our power to help the children understand this. Catechists will do this verbally, and might also make some changes that could impact the children subconsciously, such as altering the arrangement of the desks.
Another important thing we do this week is enjoy bread with the children. The beautiful presentation of the bread and the pleasant time the catechists and teachers have eating it together will set the tone for the coming weeks.
OBJECTIVES:
- Children should be very clear that we are now beginning study of a completely different Sacrament.
- Children will become familiar with the “Loaves and Fishes” story from Scripture
- Catechists will introduce the idea of preparing for first communion.
- Catechist will introduce vocabulary: Eucharist, Holy Communion
- Children will experience the unity that comes from eating together.
HOMEWORK: Children may bring home a picture to color (if they like....I am never in favor of forcing anyone to color!) Ask your child to retell the “Loaves and Fishes” story to you or someone at home. Please read Chapter 21 to your child. Emphasize how this image of Jesus as shepherd connects with the “Loaves and Fishes” story.
